South Vietnam, officially the Republic of Vietnam (RVN; Vietnamese: Việt Nam Cộng hòa; VNCH, French: République du Viêt Nam), was a country in Southeast Asia that existed from 1955 to 1975.

South Vietnam was a nation-state born from the failure of the Geneva Accords. The new rulers of South Vietnam were backed by the United States and their Western allies. These men, epitomised by the Christian prime minister Ngo Dinh Diem, presented themselves as aspiring democrats and capitalists.

The Republic of Vietnam was proclaimed, and Ngo Dinh Diem was elected president on October 26, 1955. The US established the Military Assistance and Advisory Group (MAAG) consisting of 700 military advisors on April 28, 1956. Communists began a rebellion against the government of South Vietnam in July 1957.

The PRG was recognized as the government of South Vietnam by most communist states. It signed the 1973 Paris Peace Treaty as an independent entity, separate from both the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV, North Vietnam) and the Republic of Vietnam (RVN, South Vietnam).

As it happened, the South’s government and army collapsed in less than two months. Thousands of ARVN troops retreated in disorder, first from the central highlands and then from Hue and Da Nang.
