In 2023, Wyoming ranked eighth nationally in crude oil production. Wyoming produced 96.8 million barrels of crude oil in 2023, up from 90.8 million barrels in 2022. The Mike Murphy #1 well was the first oil well drilled in Wyoming.

Nationally, Wyoming ranked 8th in production of both crude oil and natural gas in 2022. Wyoming also ranked the 2nd largest producer of both oil and natural gas on federal lands, making the state disproportionally affected by national policy changes.

BLM Wyoming manages more than 42 million acres of fluid mineral estate in Wyoming and Nebraska and administers more than 10 million acres of federal oil and gas leases, the largest area of any state in the nation.

In many ways, 2022 was a return to normal for Wyoming’s oil and gas industry. Crude oil and natural gas production returned to their pre-pandemic trends: year-over-year gains in oil volumes and a gradual decline in natural gas production.

Oil and Gas is the single largest economic driver in the State of Wyoming. PAW members produce 90% of Wyoming’s oil and gas, generating over $5 billion in economic activity and employing more than 18,000 of Wyoming’s hard-working men and women.

Wyoming was the eighth-largest crude oil-producing state in the nation in 2023, accounting for 2% of U.S. total crude oil output. The state was the 10th-largest natural gas producer, and accounted for about 2% of U.S. marketed gas production.
