9. Winter Combat Field Uniform. A three-piece uniform consisting of a jacket, overalls, and helmet. Construction consisted of a water repellent cotton twill outer and heavy wool lining. The jacket had an elastic collar, cuffs, and waistband to keep the wind out and retain body warmth. This uniform was originally developed for tank crews.

The Winter Combat Uniform consisted of the Winter Combat Jacket, Winter Combat Trousers, and the Winter Combat Helmet. The jacket eventually became known as the Tanker Jacket by the veterans and uniform collectors. It's intent was for use by any Army troops needing a heavy-duty cold weather winter garment.

By 1941, soldiers wore an olive drab wool flannel shirt and wool serge trousers in winter and a cotton khaki shirt and trousers in summer, both worn with ankle-high russet brown leather service shoes and light OD canvas leggings. It was complemented by woolen trousers and a long-sleeved woolen shirt in a shade lighter (OD 32). The shirt could have been chinos in OD32 but could not be worn without a coat.
