The hangar doors have been painted with large-scale reproductions of details from iconic Viareggio Carnival posters. This is where the spirit of Carnival lives all year. The access to the Cittadella is free of charge throughout the year.

The Viareggio Carnival turns a century old and is celebrated with a memorable edition. Guerra e pace by Arnaldo Galli was the non-competing superfloat dedicated to peace and a symbol of the creative genius of all the Carnival masters.

The main material for the floats of the Viareggio Carnival is papier-mâché, or more precisely, cast paper. Perfected by Viareggio painter and builder Antonio D’Arliano in 1925, it has enabled the creation of increasingly large yet lightweight structures.

The majestic floats, with their imaginative and colourful shapes, are the soul of the Viareggio Carnival and attract thousands of tourists each year eager to admire these extraordinary, handcrafted creations. See all the floats of the 2025 edition!

The Carnival Cittadella houses the Carnival Museum, a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history and traditions of the Viareggio Carnival. Alongside this is the Espace Gilbert, which houses temporary exhibitions dedicated to papier-mâché.
