Catch a glimpse of this shy bird and you’ll see a handsome thrush with a slaty gray back and breast band set against burnt-orange breast and belly. Common in the Cascades, Northern Rockies, and Pacific Coast, Varied Thrushes forage for insects in summer and switch to berries and seeds in winter.

2020年10月31日 · This is widely varied group of birds in north central Washington. From the bird that everyone knows, the American Robin, to a couple we are luck to see (Hermit Thrush and Swainson's Thrush), the group also contains two species of bluebirds.

There are eight types of thrushes including the native and vagrant species that have been seen in North America. This does not include other bird species such as the bluebirds, robins, fieldfare, Veery and Solitaire, who are all members of the thrush family.

Long minor-key whistles repeated after deliberate pauses, they seem like sounds without a source; only a careful searcher will find the bird itself. Although it looks superficially like a robin, the Varied Thrush is far more elusive, usually feeding on the ground among dense thickets.

There are three species of spot-breasted thrushes found in Washington. All three - the Swainson's Thrush, the Veery, and the Hermit Thrush - have solid brownish upperparts (back, wings, and tail), light-colored bellies, whitish eye-rings, and varying degrees of spotting on their breasts.

Varied Thrushes are common in conifer forests throughout the state. In western Washington, they are found in all forest zones, but do not breed in urban areas around Puget Sound. In eastern Washington, they are found in the montane and sub-alpine forests at higher elevations above the Ponderosa pine zone.

The varied thrush breeds western North America, primarily in Alaska, Yukon, British Columbia, and a western sliver of the Northwest Territories. Its breeding range stretches down into the northwestern United States in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and small areas of western Montana and northern California.

A beautiful, boldly-patterned thrush. Males are an exquisite combination of blue-gray, orange, and black. Note black breast band, orange eyebrow, and orange markings on the wings. Females show a similarly gorgeous, but duller pattern.

Both subspecies of Varied Thrush breed in Washington, I.n.naevius in western Washington and I.n.meruloides in eastern Washington. In eastern Washington, the Varied Thrush is generally found above the Ponderosa Pine zone.
