2019年2月26日 · Silicone hydrogel contact lenses are advanced soft lenses that allow more oxygen to pass through the lens to the cornea than regular soft ("hydrogel") contacts. In fact, silicone hydrogel lenses enable up to five times more oxygen to reach the cornea than regular hydrogel lenses.

Silicone hydrogels are the latest in a line of developments in soft lens material aimed at increasing the oxygen permeability (increased comfort, longer wear and better eye health), wettability (better comfort) and clinical performance of contact lenses.

Hydrogel lenses generally have a higher water content and much lower oxygen permeability than silicone hydrogel lenses. Low oxygen transmissibility is a major contributor in contact lens‐related complications, such as corneal inflammation or neovascularization (Dillehay 2007).

According to this study, silicone hydrogel lenses eliminate lens-induced hypoxia in most wearers and have less impact on corneal homeostasis than other lens types do. However, their mechanical interactions with ocular tissue and impact on tear structure and physiology are similar to those observed in typical soft lens wear.

The relatively high modulus of first-generation silicone hydrogels has been associated with mechanical issues such as superior epithelial arcuate lesions, mucin balls, contact lens papillary conjunctivitis, conjunctival epithelial flaps and reports of initial lens awareness.

Introduced around the turn of the 21st century, silicone hydrogel contact lenses alleviated hypoxic anterior eye complications due to their high oxygen transmissibility. The purpose of this work is to update earlier surveys by describing international trends in silicone hydrogel daily wear contact lens fitting between 2000 and 2023.
