Paper wasps are a type of vespid wasps. The term is typically used to refer to members of the vespid subfamily Polistinae, though it often colloquially includes members of the subfamilies Vespinae (hornets and yellowjackets) and Stenogastrinae, which also make nests out of paper.

Paper wasps are semi-social insects with a caste made up of workers, queens and males. Fertilized queens overwinter in protected spaces beneath tree bark or in cracks and crevices in homes. When spring arrives, they select a nesting site, begin building a nest and lay their eggs.

Paper wasps are 3/4 to 1 inch long, slender, narrow-waisted wasps with smoky black wings that are folded lengthwise when at rest. Paper wasps are usually brown with yellow markings on the head, thorax and bands on the abdomen.
