Jul 26, 2006 · I can tell the most difference in the body shape. The Nile perch has a more pointed snout and the barramundi is more rounded. Also the jaw line is different and the barramundi has a noticeable arch from the snout up to his dorsal fin. Also the barramundi has much larger scales than the Nile and the Nile has larger eyes.

The Barramundi closely resembles the Nile Perch, Lates niloticus, an African freshwater species that is imported from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. The two species are difficult to tell apart because the body proportions change with growth.

Oct 31, 2005 · The Nile Perch by all accounts is a close relative to the Barramundi. It also grows to a massive size, but unlike the Barra it lives solely in freshwater. I would think that by that account a Nile Perch would be as tasty as a freshwater Barra.

Jul 26, 2006 · Judging from the pics, you probably had a hard time IDing the two because they both appear to be barramundi. The jaw structure and head profile appear to be the same. I can't really see the scale size of the fish in the second picture.

Jul 26, 2006 · Once these fish hit 10-12 inches they start to look very, very similar. The one thing I have noticed for sure is that Barras are more elongated and nile have a taller profile. Barras also differ dramatically within their species depending on where they are from (India, Oz, Indonesia etc.)or if the are captive raised for market.
