Over forty years later, the “backyard zoo” has become a world-renowned wildlife education center where visitors connect with Belize’s unique natural heritage: the animals. The Belize Zoo is the oldest wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facility in Belize.

You can see Belize’s elusive and endangered National Animal, the Central American tapir, up close. As you walk around the Zoo you will see Yucatan spider monkeys, white-tailed deer, coatimundis, white-lipped peccaries, and Belize’s five wildcat species. Ever heard of a jaguarundi before? How about a margay?

At The Belize Zoo, you can observe many of Belize’s magnificent mammals in a natural setting, with nearly 20 species represented. Among them is the elusive and endangered Central American tapir, Belize’s National Animal, which you can see up close.

It sits upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 150 animals, representing over 45 species, all native to Belize.
