The Lighthouse of Genoa (Italian: Lanterna di Genova), known as La Lanterna, is the main lighthouse serving the Port of Genoa. Besides being an important aid to night navigation in the vicinity, the tower serves as a symbol and a landmark for the city of Genoa.

In the siege at the Briglia – the stronghold made by King Louis XII during the French domination of Genoa, located on the same hill where the Lanterna’s tower raised - the tower was hit by the bombs shot by the Genoese insurgents and partially destroyed.

The lighthouse and symbol of the city. Standing tall at 77 meters, the iconic Genoa Lanterna is the tallest lighthouse in the Mediterranean and the second tallest in Europe. It was built in 1543 on the promontory of Capo di Faro, but according to some reports a watchtower having a similar structure existed there as early as the 12th century.

The Lighthouse of Genoa has been built in 1128 on the top of Capo di Faro (Lighthouse Cape), where people used to light bonfires to serve as a navigational aid for sailors. The Lighthouse served a dual purpose: as a warning signal and as a fortification.
