At a ball, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner) meets a young woman, Susan Atwell (Sean Young), and the two immediately begin an affair, although Atwell is involved with someone else.

Kevin Costner (rarely out of his glistening white uniform) portrays a Pentagon naval officer assigned by the Secretary of Defense to investigate the murder of the Secretary's mistress (who was Costner's lover as well), and complications arise after the bewildered officer begins to find all the evidence pointing to himself as the primary suspect.

Kevin Costner did actually roll over the hood of a moving car during one of the chase sequences. According to the film's original press material, an insurance executive approached director Roger Donaldson after that stunt and said: "Don't you ever... ever... EVER... do that again!"

Tom Farrell : Let's get out of here. Susan Atwell : My date's not going to like that much. But what the hell, his wife will be delighted.

At some point, Tom's pubic hair sticks out his pants. There is a brief sex scene in the back of a car. There is passionate kissing and some movement, undressing, the side and top of Susan's breast and nipple can be seen briefly.

The action is tight and suspenseful, and the plot culminates in the most astounding last-minute switch of the decade. Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman shine as the main characters, and Will Patton leads a solid supporting cast.
