Katara is a waterbending master, born in the Southern Water Tribe to Chief Hakoda and his wife Kya. During her childhood, she was the only waterbender living in the Southern Water Tribe.

While the Northern Water Tribe was an exceptionally strict patriarchal culture, gender roles in the Southern Water Tribe were traditionally far less rigid. Katara was shocked to learn that the Northern Tribe forbade women from learning waterbending apart for healing purposes, seeing how her father Hakoda recognized her bending abilities early ...

Katara, a fourteen-year-old girl living in the Southern Water Tribe, was the only waterbender left in her tribe after several Fire Nation raids. With the death of her mother and the long absence of her father due to the Hundred Year War, she was forced to grow up fairly quickly.

In "Harmonic Convergence", Katara is seen in her healing hut attending to injured Southern Water Tribe soldiers, and later used healing to keep her granddaughter Jinora's body alive while her soul was trapped in the spirit world.

She is a young female Waterbender, born and raised in the Southern Water Tribe by her grandmother, Kanna, alongside her big brother Sokka. Katara was not only a waterbender, but the last and only one capable of the art in her tribe.

In the season 3 episode “The Southern Raiders” we learn what specifically happened to Kya as told in flashbacks from Sokka, Katara, and Yan-Rha respectively. In Yan-Rha’s flashback, he mentions that “his source” told him there is one remaining waterbender in the Southern Water tribe, hence why the raid occurred.

It’s shown in the comics that Katara wasn’t the last Southern Water Tribe waterbender but the only other two she can find are a pair of twins a few years younger than her, ~10 years old who were taught to hide their bending at all costs.
