I have pictures from my father’s days working on ships around the Great Lakes. Not sure of dates but guessing it’s late 40’s or early 50’s. One ship was George W. Perkins as the name is displayed in one of the pics.

Large-scale shipping on the Great Lakes did not begin until iron and copper were discovered on the shores of Lake Superior in the 1840s. Prior to that time, shipping and commerce on the lakes was small, taking place on sailing vessels or paddlewheel-propelled boats.

The Milwaukee Public Library houses the Great Lakes Marine Collection. This collection contains over 7,000 files on ships that sailed since 1679 and some that sail on the Great Lakes today. Vessels included are diesel-powered, sailing ships, barges, cargo vessels, passenger boats, military vessels, and pleasure craft.
