Groundwater | Applications – GRACE Tellus
NASA’s GRACE mission provides the first opportunity to directly measure groundwater changes from space. By observing changes in the Earth’s gravity field, scientists can estimate changes in the amount of water stored in a region, which cause changes in gravity.

Scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center generate groundwater and soil moisture drought indicators each week. They are based on terrestrial water storage observations derived from GRACE-FO satellite data and integrated with other observations, using a sophisticated numerical model of land surface water and energy processes.
Integrating GRACE Satellite and Ground-based Estimates of Groundwater …
2016年6月29日 · With increasing applications of GRACE satellite data, some suggest that we could greatly reduce ground-based monitoring and modeling of groundwater storage changes, but the large uncertainties associated with these data sets remain an obstacle to the broader utilization of GRACE data.

Groundwater and Soil Moisture Conditions from GRACE Data
2025年2月11日 · We have developed wetness/drought indicator maps for shallow groundwater and surface and root zone soil moisture. The maps integrate data from multiple ground and space based observing systems, including NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission.
Map of Groundwater Storage Trends for Earth's 37 Largest ... - GRACE …
A map of groundwater storage trends for Earth's 37 largest aquifers using GRACE data, showing depletion and replenishment in millimeters of water per year. Twenty-one aquifers have exceeded sustainability tipping points and are being depleted, and 13 of these are considered significantly distressed, threatening regional water security and ...
Water Storage | Science – GRACE-FO
"From 2002 to 2017, NASA's twin Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites monitored large-scale groundwater changes all over the globe. In northwest India, the Middle East, and also close to home here in California's Central Valley aquifer, a significant fraction of the water needed to farm comes from groundwater.
GRACE Sees Groundwater Losses Around the World
This visualization shows extremes of the water cycle — droughts and pluvials — over a twenty-year period (2002-2021) based on observations from the GRACE and GRACE-FO satellites. Dry events are sho...
GROUNDWATER Prediction Using GRACE Satellite - GitHub
This project focuses on predicting ground water levels using data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite. The data includes detailed measurements of Earth's gravity field, which provides insights into Earth's water reservoirs over land, ice, and oceans.
21 and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission. Most hydrologists were skeptical of the satellite 22 gravimetry approach at first, but validation studies assuaged their concerns and high-23 profile, GRACE-based groundwater depletion studies caused an explosion of interest. The
