Here is a look into the Deep Creek Lake history and the surrounding area. In the early 1900s, Deep Creek Lake was once littered with farms, schools, and private residences. The idea to bring power and electricity to the area by implementing the use of the Youghiogheny River is the turning point for the area.

But there is a rich history of the area pre-1925 including two earlier dams on Deep Creek, a rock formation known as the “Devil’s Castle” and that the Glades was a vacation hotspot back in the early 1800’s. We’ll dive deep into the history of Deep Creek before the dam.

Deep Creek Lake is the largest man-made lake in Maryland. At full pool, Deep Creek Lake has 65 miles of shoreline and sites at 2462 feet above sea level. In 2000, the State of Maryland purchased the land underlying Deep Creek Lake, buffer zone properties and certain other parcels from General Public Utility, Inc.

Today, Deep Creek Lake in Maryland is known as a four-season vacation and tourism spot, but it hasn’t always been that way. In the early 1900’s, Deep Creek Lake history shows that the area was occupied by farms, schools, and private residences.

History of Deep Creek Lake (Note: Most of the information below has been taken from the Thousand Acres Home Page) In the early 1920's the Eastern Land Corporation, a subsidiary of the Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Corporation, purchased land in Garrett County, Maryland for the purpose of power generation.

It was establshed as place to send a young man in your family to enjoy life in the beauty of GC with DCL to play on and in, with boating, fishing, swimming, sailing. They stayed in tents from WWI and had a cook.

Below is our attempt to look at Deep Creek Lake by the Decade, with our draft of major events in its history. 1924-35: Camps and Farms – the new lake attracts some to build, but the Great Depression and the remoteness of the area keeps growth at the lake low. May 26, 1925 – hydroelectric plant becomes operational.

Deep Creek Lake encompasses about 3900 acres with 65 miles of shoreline. This man-made lake got its start in 1925 as the result of an effort undertaken by the Youghiogheny Hydro Electric Corporation to harness the power of the Youghiogheny River. A 1300-foot-long impoundment dam was constructed to stem the flow of water.
