Floodplain sediments downstream from 19th century gold mining sites were studied to determine if mining activities released toxic metals into streams. Mercury was found to be the only significant mining pollutant, and it results from the use of mercury to amalgamate and recover gold from stamp mills and sluices.

This paper focuses on the downstream dispersal and storage of mercury in streambank sediments of two watersheds near Dahlonega, Georgia. Mercury concentrations for individual samples of historical sediment range from 0.02 to 12.00 ppm, with average values in streambanks near the core of the mining district ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 ppm.

A reconnaissance investigation of mercury contamination associated with historic gold mining in North Carolina, USA, revealed high concentrations of mercury in channel and floodplain sediments downstream from the Gold Hill mining district.

The Dahlonega Gold Mining Company sells land situated across from the Fields Gold Mine to the Lumpkin Chestatee Mining Company in 1867. Boling Fields is buried in the family burial ground on the banks of the Chestatee.

Soon thousands of miners poured into northern Georgia, including the area around Dahlonega, which proved especially rich in gold with few impurities. Most of the early miners pursued "deposit" mining, also known as placer mining.
