In 2023, the University of Central Lancashire made UK baseball history by offering two students, Aflie Hill and Nathan Simmons, scholarships to play baseball. As far as is known, it was the first time that had happened in the UK.

British baseball, also known colloquially in Wales as Welsh baseball (Welsh: Pêl Fas Gymreig), is a bat-and-ball game played in Wales, England, and to a lesser extent in Ireland and Scotland. The game emerged as a distinct sport in Merseyside, Gloucester and South Wales at the end of the 19th century, drawing on the much older game of rounders .

The United Kingdom is credited with winning the inaugural Baseball World Cup (BWC) in 1938, beating the United States by four games to one in an international series (the Amateur World Series) hosted in England.

Baseball has never had a following in the UK like it enjoys in the US, but its golden years were those proceeding World War 2. Partly this was due to the success of the national team shortly before the war: in 1938, with the baseball scoreboards showing that they beat the Americans to win the Baseball World Cup.

Baseball, as it is known today, was introduced to the United Kingdom in 1890 by Francis Ley, a Derby man who had discovered the game on a trip to the United States, and Albert Goodwill Spalding an American sporting goods businessman who saw opportunities to expand his business across the Atlantic.
