The Boer republics (sometimes also referred to as Boer states) were independent, self-governing republics formed (especially in the last half of the 19th century) by Dutch-speaking inhabitants of the Cape Colony and their descendants.

Boers (/ bʊərz / BOORZ; Afrikaans: Boere; [ˈbuːrə]) are the descendants of the proto Afrikaans -speaking Free Burghers of the eastern Cape frontier [2] in Southern Africa during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

Today the flag represents freedom under the Boer or Afrikaner people, [citation needed] and is often displayed in places like Orania and Kleinfontein which is known as Afrikaner cultural settlements and located in the Northern Cape and Pretoria respectively.

Their alliance was symbolically expressed by the various flags that were used by the Boer forces during the war. Most were variants of the Vierkleur Vlag with orange added, thus combining the colors of both Boer republics.
