2024年2月14日 · One of the greatest Greek mythical love stories is the tale of Ceyx and Alcyone – the king and queen of Trachis. Their love was so deep that both gods and mortals idolized their relationship. Feeling so enraptured by their love, they began to call themselves Hera and Zeus, the king and queen of all gods.

In Greek mythology, Alcyone (or dubiously Halcyone) [1] (/ æ l ˈ s aɪ ə ˌ n i, h æ l ˈ s aɪ ə ˌ n i /; Ancient Greek: Ἀλκυόνη, romanized: Alkyónē) and Ceyx (/ ˈ s iː ɪ k s /; Κήϋξ, Kḗÿx) were a wife and husband who incurred the wrath of the god Zeus for their romantic hubris.

A tree divides the world that Ceyx is leaving, inhabited by elegantly dressed figures and graceful architecture, from his destiny, the wooden boat isolated in the sea. Alcyone and Ceyx are shown in the middle of a lengthy goodbye: Alcyone, who had a premonition of a violent storm at sea, begs her husband not to go.

One of a series of tragic narratives from classical mythology executed by Wilson from the 1760s, following his return from Italy. According to William Carey, the artist composed the rocky cliff and tower above by studying a pot of beer set on a 'large decayed cheese'.
