The .50 Alaskan / 13x53mmR is a wildcat cartridge developed by Harold Johnson and Harold Fuller of the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska in the 1950s. Johnson based the cartridge on the .348 Winchester in order to create a rifle capable of handling the large bears in Alaska.

In true Alaskan form — i.e. resourcefulness — Bill Fuller used an old section of a .50 caliber BMG barrel. A skilled machinist, he threaded and turned it down to proper dimensions for fitting onto a Winchester 1886 rifle and chambered it for the blown-out .50 Alaskan cartridge.

2015年7月8日 · The 50 Alaskan was developed by Harold Johnson in the 1950s for Alaskan guides. He took the classic .348 Winchester, blew out the case, and shoved a .510 bullet in the end. What a brilliant idea.

The .50 Alaskan is formed from .348 Winchester brass. It is a little bit of a project but works well if you use a tool in the reloading press to step it from .348 to .50 Caliber. You can also use different expanders from other die sets and gradually step it up it’s a little slower but it does work.

The 50 B&M Alaskan is capable of running the 500 gr Hornady at 1850 fps, I would consider it an extremely good combination for thin skinned dangerous game. These bullets, along with many other .500 caliber bullets, such as the 400 Sierra and the 325 Swift are excellent alternatives for the 50 B&M Alaskan.
