If you have trichomoniasis, your provider may also do tests for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) so they can also be treated.

In women, the infection is usually in the vagina. In men, the infection is usually in the urethra, a tube in the penis that carries urine (pee) out of the body. A urine sample may also be used. You can get trichomoniasis by having sex without a condom with a partner who has the infection.

For women, the discharge may be thick, thin, or frothy with a yellow-green color. For men, the discharge may be thin and white.

Trichomonas cannot be detected based on symptoms alone. It can be detected by the examination of a swab specimen (from the cervix for women or from the urethra for men) taken by a clinician, of self-collected vaginal swabs, or of voided urine.
