It is one of the masterpieces of the Athenian Exekias who together with the Amasis Painter, pioneered the black-figure technique in the second half of the 6th century BC. The vase, dated to around 540-530 BC shows the Greek hero Achilles slaying Penthesilea, the queen of the Amazons during the epic Trojan war. The climax of the scene, as represented in the traditional black-figure design, shows Achilles thrusting his spear into the neck of Penthesilea at the very moment he falls in love with her.
