Larry Johnson (b.1959) is an American artist living and working in Los Angeles. [1] Johnson’s humorous and often cutting commentaries on his own culture’s exported ideologies have made him one of the foremost artists of his generation.

2009年9月6日 · The Hammer Museum presents the first full-scale survey exhibition of work by the Los Angeles-based artist Larry Johnson. Johnson's work is quintessentially of and about Los Angeles but at the same time forms a penetrating commentary on American culture more broadly.

Image and text share space in his work in cryptically critical ways, as shorthand phrases, logos, and slogans celebrate the veneer and vices of Hollywood and, more broadly, Los Angeles.

Larry Johnson is often considered an artist’s artist. Although colleagues such as Pae White and Nate Lowman reference Johnson’s work, he has yet to attain wide institutional acknowledgement. The exhibition at the Hammer Museum, which features over 60 works from 1982 to the present, is a first step in this direction.

Born and raised on the high desert in Lakeview, Oregon, Larry Johnson studied architecture at the University of Oregon then went on to the L.A. Art Center for commercial illustration. Even as a commercial artist, he painted wildlife and landscapes.
