Trump’s tariffs, because of the real increased cost of doing business with the U.S., as well as the perception that the U.S. is no longer a reliable ally, are driving Canada closer to China.

In March, Trump imposed 25% duties on Canadian exports not covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement – reduced to 10% for energy products and potash.

Canada already faces 25% tariffs on exports to the U.S., though those levies exclude a host of goods compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, a free trade agreement.
