Firefighters are battling a brush fire in the canyon near Corte Claro and Paseo Encino in Carlsbad that is sending large plumes of smoke into the air that can be seen miles away. Multiple units have been assigned by the Carlsbad Fire Department to assist in fighting the blaze.

Crews made progress Friday containing a 45-acre wildfire that erupted in the eastern reaches of Carlsbad, prompting temporary evacuations as ground and airborne crews worked to douse the flames.

Firefighters managed to stop the forward progress of the Claro Fire, which ignited Thursday afternoon and triggered evacuations, at 45 acres, according to Cal Fire.
