The analysis showed that some of the snakes from Ethiopia were genetically distinct. Researchers realized they’d discovered a new species: Boaedon broadleyi, or Broadley’s African house snake.

These snakes left Asia for Africa, between 37.5 million, at the earliest, and 24.4 years ago and their descendants then dispersed into Europe, Australasia and the Americas in multiple waves.
