Joking about Trump’s frenetic rollout of tariffs has become a common response to the altogether serious issue of an economic fight started by the president that has upended markets, led to boycotts of American-made goods and travel to the U.S., and sparked fears of a recession.

The country, a key destination for California's billions of dollars in exports, has imposed an 84% tariff on U.S. goods.

U.S. President Donald Trump met with major retailers, including Walmart , Home Depot , Lowe's and Target , on Monday to discuss broad-based tariffs likely to raise the cost of everyday goods that they import.
