Syracuse, N.Y. – The mother of 17-year-old Karlianne Short wrote a poem in memory of her daughter that was read Friday at the sentencing of her daughter’s killer.

So she gave Paddy her first dress and wrote her a beautiful poem about a caterpillar becoming a butterfly to help herself understand the change. Paddy, now 8, always knew she wanted to be a girl.

Three years later, Lorna felt it was finally time to read Paddy, now 8 years old, the poem. The beautiful moment was filmed as part of a documentary about transgender youths for UK News Channel 4.
