In South Jersey there was no death penalty for any crime and there were only two crimes, murder and treason ... until one year had elapsed and then only on the governor’s order.
George and Mayes were both accused in a prior murder ... if there was enough probable cause to turn the case over to a grand jury. No further filings have been made in the case since then.
