Jesus is the Good Shepherd because of His concern for the sheep − “I am the good shepherd; I know My sheep and My sheep know Me” (vs. 14).

Given that the Shepherd is a long, rambling text that doesn’t explicitly mention Jesus, you might assume that it was only read by a small number of early Christian theologians.

Jesus is not a hired hand, He is the Good Shepherd. He knows who His sheep are and will never let them out of His sight. He can be trusted fully because He is fully trustworthy.
