His son, Derrick Thomas Jr., is now 33 years old — the same age the linebacker was when he lost his life after a car accident. "It feels crazy because I still feel so young.

“When I woke up in the hospital after my car accident, I said, ‘Mom, if I can't walk again, I don't want to be here. If they got to cut my foot off, I don't want to be here,’” Thomas reveals.

Derrick died a few weeks after being involved in a car accident on January 23, 2000. He was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame later that year, and into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
