The Trump administration has suspended $175 million in funding to the University of Pennsylvania over its transgender sports policies, the White House said on Wednesday, its latest effort to force schools to fall in line with its policies.

A social media post from the White House says Penn is losing millions of dollars in federal funding, but the university says it has received no formal notice.

The White House did not explain the legal basis for the freeze or what needs to happen to reinstate the funding.
