A major hurricane was churning across the Pacific Ocean but was several hundred miles south-southeast of Hawaii and posed no threat to the islands, forecasters said Tuesday. Hurricane Iona is one of two major weather systems in the central Pacific Ocean.

Tropical Storm Iona was about 730 miles south-southwest of Honolulu and was moving to the west at 22 miles per hour. The National Hurricane Center said additional weakening is expected Wednesday, and then it will maintain intensity Thursday as it moves over warmer sea surface temperatures.
