Packard began development on what became known as the Packard 1A-2775 X-24 aircraft engine, which came to fruition and took to the skies for the first time at the 1927 Schneider Trophy race.

Although the company sold automobiles through 1958, the last true Packards rolled off the assembly line in 1956. The V8 arrived too late.
