It's well known that Changan is one of China's three major state-owned automobile enterprises, with its roots stretching back to the Shanghai Bureau of Marine Artillery established in 1862.

Wang Jun, Changan Automobile's President, disclosed the plan to establish a battery research institute. By the end of 2023, the institute already had over 1,200 battery R&D personnel.

Changan's European ambitions are far from spontaneous. Planning began in 2017, with groundwork laid as early as 2001 when it opened a design center in Turin, Italy.
