A portion of the Keystone Pipeline ruptured near Fort Ransom, North Dakota, around 7:44 a.m., according to local reports.

The latest spill comes two years after the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) identified what it called a pattern of "increasingly frequent incidents" on the Keystone system.

The pipeline ruptured Tuesday morning in southeastern North Dakota and was shut down within two minutes by an employee who heard a mechanical bang.

According to the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, there was a malfunction of the pipeline near Fort Ransom that caused oil to spill into a nearby field south of a pump station. A small stream near the site has been isolated and remains unaffected at this time,
