President Trump this week suspended U.S. military assistance and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, just days after a contentious Oval Office meeting in which he publicly berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for failing to cooperate with his plan for a cease-fire with Russia.

President Zelensky sees that region as a critical source of leverage in any future peace talks with the Russians. His aim is to trade parts of the Kursk area for Ukrainian land that Russia has occupied. “We will swap one territory for another,” Zelensky told the Guardian last month.

During talks in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine agreed to President Trump’s plan for a 30-day ceasefire for the war in Ukraine. Trump said that he will now speak to Russia’s president Putin. The U.S. will now resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
