Galopin Des Champs has been denied a third straight win in horse racing's Cheltenham Gold Cup after he was beaten by Inothewayurthinkin in the prestigious jumps race in England.

Galopin Des Champs will run for history in the Gold Cup later today. The Willie Mullins-trained horse is the odds-on favourite to win the 4pm race. If he succeeds, Galopin Des Champs will become only the fifth horse to win three consecutive Gold Cups. He will be ridden by Paul Townend.

Inothewayurthinkin, who was sent off at 15-2, caused a shock by lowering the colours of 8-13 favourite Galopin Des Champs in the festival's most prestigious race. A late contender for the Gold Cup, he vindicated the decision of his connections to supplement him at a cost of £25,000.

Inothewayurthinkin, a 15/2 shot trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridden by Mark Walsh, won the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday and denied odds-on favourite Galopin Des Champs a third successive victory. Galopin Des Champs (1/2) finished second and 40/1 Gentlemansgame was third.

The unpredictability of horse racing was hammered home as instead of joining Golden Miller, Cottage Rake, Arkle and Best Mate as three-time winners of the Boodles Gold Cup, Galopin Des Champs joined a succession of beaten odds-on shots at this year’s Festival after he was put firmly in his place by Inothewayurthinkin.
