We are considering a trip in late August with two kids ages 6 and 9. Primary concern is the heat . Will it be too hot during the day for them to ride or play on playground comfortably? Are the cabins without AC and therefore also hot during the day? It seems like the pool can be debris filled and the pond may be too cold for swimming.

Hi there, the weather is unpredictable because of the mountain location. It can be very cold at night one night, and then warm the next. It's usually cold in the mornings and warms up in the afternoon. The hottest it got while we were there was 87ish. It's not unbearable though. I'm sorry but I didn't even notice if they had AC because it wasn't so hot in the cabins that we needed AC. If it was warm we just slept with the sheets and no blankets. I also heard it starts to get cooler in August so I think you should be fine.

I honestly don't know how to answer this question. There are plenty of reasons that any couple might feel uncomfortable on a ranch like this...e.g. if they don't like the outdoors or being in close proximity to strangers. I suppose the real question would be would the couple be made to feel uncomfortable because they are gay...and I have no reason to believe that this would be the case, but that is outside my personal experience. Guests to the ranch come from all over the country and the world, so there is no telling what point of view other guests might have. However, over the many years that we have been guests, I have never seen the Kelseys treat any one of their guests with anything less than respect.
Noticed one comment saying children have to dine separately and at different times - seems strange considering I didn't find any other reviewers making such a claim - perhaps some clarification might put minds at rest for any families who are thinking of staying with you guys...

Yes. There are separate dining times for under 18 sometimes (bonfire cookout night). And other nights its the same time but all guests have assigned seating. Mixed up each night. The kids are seated together but by age. The dining room in small and fairly intimate so its not like you are far away from anyone. At first I thought it a bit cumbersome but then thoroughly enjoyed myself meeting new people. My kids 16 (kids teen table) and 18 (adults -- he also really liked talking to grown ups that were not his parents!) ended up happy with the seating as well. Its a good way to stretch the family to meet new people!
Did you swim? Was it acceptable even though it's not a 'pool'? Did you ask for extra food and were refused? I've looked at this ranch; the eating arrangements are clearly stated --- and honestly, I prefer the separation between children and adults.

Well, the Ritz Carlton it is not, but that's what makes it special. Five miles off the highway down a dirt road, so you won't find lounge chairs and pool service but swimming isn't really why you would go here. There are always a few kids who use it - fresh water and solar heated. Never been refused food, unless they had run out. The food is hearty and sufficient, all you have to do is ask your server for more of whatever your table has run out of and 99% of the time you will get a refill. Snacks for the cabin are a good idea. Adult happy hour has plenty of munchies - veggies, nuts, chips, cheese, salami, crackers.
