We were staying with friends in Kendal, so they drove us. We started at Windemere, which is a large and very busy lake, then traveled to the next 4 lakes in geographical order. Some lakes you just stroll around and read the interpretive signs, but the largest one, Windemere, has boat tours, World of Beatrix Potter attraction, places to walk, etc. Most have a gift shop, eateries, as well. We stopped at the gift shop or walking area adjacent to each lake.
