Can you just show up and buy a tour for the next hour or must one pre-purchase? I am planning on being there on Tuesday, but no idea when I get there.

We did not know that we had to buy tickets...we just showed up. It was not a problem. one to two hours is tons of time to see and enjoy this beautiful place.
